Hong Kong to Sweden by train, Travel BlogBack to the Transsiberian page <- Föregående dag - Nästa dag -> 7.6.2005 - St Petersburg We arrived in St Petersburg early Sunday morning. We went to the guesthouse we booked on the internet. It's a nice one located in the city center. St Petersburg's center feels much more compact and easily accessible than Moscow's. The population is only 4.5 million compared to Moscow's 9 million. We slept a couple of hours and then hit the streets. St Petersburg is a really nice city. There are beautiful buildings everwhere.
We went to the winter palace and The Hermitage Museum inside. I was there six years ago and I recognized a lot. But it's so massive it's unbelievable. I guess the photos can give a hint.
St Petersburg also has quite a number of churches and cathedrals. St Petersburg was the capital until the revolution in 1917 when Lenin & Co moved the capital to Moscow to mark the end of the monarchy.
After all the sightseeing we went out and managed to find a nice disco that was packed with people this Sunday evening. We shared a table with a group of girls and one guy, Russians of course. One of the girls spoke English and had to interpret for the rest of them. Our conversation contained a lot of "Russian vodka" and then we had to drink :). We had a great time and ended it with breakfast in a restaurant and hit the bed around 7am.
The following day (yesterday) we relaxed. We walked around town and did some clothes shopping. Today we got up early to take the train at 7.28am to Helsinki. I'm sitting on the train writing this blog and we have just passed the border into Finland. It's quite funny that the Russians check our passports carefully and even take them and bring them back later. Then the Finnish customs comes and he was satisfied with just seeing the front of my passport and didn't even bother looking at Kalle's passport :). Now we can see red wooden houses with white corners just like in Sweden, and they are actually not falling apart like the ones we've seen the last month or so. :) |
